1. Access your account

    You will need your UMN internet ID (username) and password to use University technologies and services. Verify your account is active:

    If you don’t know your University internet ID or password

    Go to My Account and select either Forgot Internet ID or Forgot Password.

    If your account is not active, you need to claim it

    If you have never signed in to University technology resources, you will need to activate your University internet account by claiming it.

    • If the information you enter does not match an unclaimed account, verify that your information was entered correctly.

  2. Enable multi-factor authentication

    The University uses Duo Security multi-factor authentication during sign-in to help protect your account.

  3. Check your University email

    Check your University email often to receive messages from your instructors, the admissions office, and other University offices.

  4. Access Canvas

    Canvas is the University’s online learning management system. Access Canvas to view course information, assignments, announcements, and messages from your instructors.

  5. Access MyU

    MyU is the University’s central portal for viewing class schedules, grades, registration information, and other University resources.

  6. Set up a Gmail app (optional)

    You can access your University-provided Gmail account through mobile Gmail apps. Instructions are available for Android and Apple devices.

Connect to WiFi

eduroam is the University’s secure WiFi network .

  • If you are in a public place and unable to connect to eduroam, connect using VPN.
  • To connect to WiFi on campus: Select eduroam from the WiFi options on your device and enter your full University email address and password.

You don’t need to buy a new laptop if you already have access to a computer (3-years-old or newer). You may want to check with your college to see if they have any specific hardware recommendations.
