Duo: Initiate Duo Security

Duo Security multi-factor authentication adds an additional layer of protection to your University of Minnesota account. Duo Security is required for all students, faculty, and staff at the University of Minnesota.

Enabling Duo Security on Your Account

Duo Security can be enabled for most University of Minnesota accounts, including departmental and student organization accounts. Note that it is not possible to remove an account from Duo after opting in.

To enable Duo Security for your account: 

  1. Sign into my-account.umn.edu with your UMN internet ID and password.
  2. Select Duo Security from the navigation menu.

  1. In the drop-down menu select Enable Duo Security

  1. Select Yes to opt in
  2. Select Submit.

Enabling Duo Security on an Existing Departmental Account

  1. Log in to Departmental Account via my-account.umn.edu.
  2. Select Duo Security
  3. Select Enable Duo Security, wait for successful enable message
  4. Log out of Departmental Account
  5. Log in to Departmental Account
  6. Enroll Duo device at "Welcome to Duo".

  7. Log out of the Departmental account.
  8. Log in to Departmental Account via my-account.umn.edu.
  9. In Duo Security, select Generate Duo Bypass Codes 
  10. Select Submit
  11. Copy and securely store all ten generated Duo bypass codes to be used by others to add their device.
  • NOTE: For every device that will need to be added to the Departmental Account, provide one of the generated Duo bypass codes.
  • Only provide one bypass code for an user. 
  • Bypass codes can only be used once.
     

Getting Started with Duo Security

  1. If you are currently signed into your UMN account, sign out. 
  2. Clear your browser's cache and cookies.     
    • Note: You may need to clear this for all time rather than the last hour or any shorter time period.    
  3. Visit any UMN website that requires sign in, such as my-account.umn.edu
  4. Enter your UMN internet ID and password, then select Sign In. 
  5. The Duo Security enrollment prompt should appear. 
  6. Select Get started.

  1. Select a device to enroll in Duo.
    Note: It is recommended that you have more than one Duo device associated with your account. The use of Duo mobile (smartphone or tablet) as one of the devices is highly recommended.

  2. Follow the remaining prompts and enter the information requested to finish setting up your Duo device. 

If it has been more than 7 days since you claimed your UMN account, contact Technology Help for assistance setting up your first Duo device.
