Kaltura MediaSpace: Upload and Share Media

This article explains how to add media into Kaltura MediaSpace. You can upload media individually into Kaltura MediaSpace. My Media in Canvas shows your personal library of all media that you own or manage in Kaltura, available for instructional use. This article covers the following:

Kaltura is a media management platform for teaching, learning, and outreach purposes. This cloud-based system automatically optimizes video files for viewing on any device, includes strong accessibility functioning, powerful search features, and deep analytics about who is watching videos and for how long. Read Recommended Video Source Formats and Specifications to view a list of media file types that you can upload and considerations to be made based on the file type.

Uploading Media

  1. Log in to Kaltura MediaSpace.
  2. Select the + Add New button in the upper-right corner of the page.
  3. Select Upload New Media. The Upload Media page appears.
  4. From the Upload Media page choose one of the following options:
    • Drag & Drop your file from your computer into the display box.
    • Use the + Choose a File to Upload button to browse files on your computer.
  5. Update the Name, Description, Tags, and Publishing Schedule as desired.
  6. Choose your video share settings.
    • Private: Media page is visible to the content owner only.
    • Unlisted: Media page is visible to anyone with a link to the page.
    • Published: Media page is visible to individuals according to permissions set for your channels. 
      • Note: You must have a Channel already created within MediaSpace to use this option.
  7. Select Save at the bottom of the page.

Notes:

  • Your file may take some time to process depending on the size and quality chosen, but it is available in My Media once fully uploaded.
  • Video files uploaded to Kaltura are run through an automatic speech recognition (ASR) captioning process which can take a few hours to run. You will be notified via email of your completed captions and receive information about those captions overnight. Learn more about Finding and Editing Captions.

Sharing Your Video

In order to share a video with others, you must set the media share settings to something other than Private.

Adjusting Video Permissions

You can adjust the video permissions for any media you are owner or co-owner of in Kaltura MediaSpace in order to share or unshare content with an audience. 

  1. Log in to Kaltura MediaSpace.
  2. From your list of videos, select the video you wish to modify the share settings. The video's page appears.
  3. Expand the Actions dropdown, then select Publish.

  4. Select Unlisted for sharing individual videos and Save
    • Or, select Published for videos meant for Channels and Save.

Getting a Shareable Link

Follow these steps to get a shareable link for people to access your media.

  1. Log in to Kaltura MediaSpace.
  2. Choose the video you wish to share by selecting the thumbnail or the video link.

  3. Scroll below the video and select the Share tab.
  4. Copy the shareable link in the Link to Media Page tab and paste it to wherever your audience will access it.
