Retention standards for Canvas course sites and Kaltura MediaSpace content will be implemented on April 15, 2026. The retention standards will reduce Canvas dashboard clutter, ensure both platforms’ continued performance, and reduce outdated or non-compliant content.

Retention standards

  • PeopleSoft-associated Canvas course sites will be deleted after five years
  • Kaltura MediaSpace files will be deleted after four years if they have nine views or fewer. If files have 10 or more views they will be retained.

People impacted by the retention standard

  • Faculty or instructors who have the teacher role in Canvas with course sites older than five years.
  • Anyone who uploads media via Canvas course sites whose media is four years if they have nine views or fewer.
  • Anyone who uploads media to Kaltura MediaSpace whose media is four years if they have nine views or fewer.

Find courses or media files that exceed the retention limit

  • People with the teacher role in Canvas courses (faculty and instructors) and media file owners and co-editors whose files exceed the retention limits will be notified via email.
  • Course sites and media pending deletion will be labeled.
