Targetprocess: Create a Feature

A Feature represents a body of work that will deliver value and can be completed within one Program Increment (PI). Features are broken down into Stories.

Anyone on a team can add Features to the Funnel. However, it is always good to communicate with the Scrum Coach, Product Owner, and Product Manager about new Features.

Note: If you are planning work that is "larger" than a Feature, use Capabilities or UMN Epics. Use Capabilities for work that spans multiple ARTs but will be completed in a single PI. Use UMN Epics for large scale work that either spans more than one PI or requires a very large capacity or cost, or affects all students or staff. Refer to the following:

Creating a Feature

Features can be created from many views in Targetprocess, but it is often easiest to create them from the Team Backlog view.

  1. Navigate to Team Backlog.
    • Expand Teams, then Team Overview, then select Team Backlog from the left navigation menu.
  2. Filter by the appropriate Portfolio and Team.
    1. Filtering the Team Kanban view will auto-fill the Portfolio and Team fields on the new Feature.
    2. Refer to Filtering the Content of a View or Folder for instructions.
  3. Select the + icon next to Features.
  4. Enter the Name of the Feature.
  5. Verify that the correct Portfolio, Teams, and Agile Release Train are specified.
  6. Select Add to continue adding more features or Add & Open to add details to the feature you just created.

Adding a Benefit Hypothesis to a Feature

Include the Benefit Hypothesis and other general information about the Feature in the Description tab. Features can be modified from any view that includes Features (Team Backlog, ART Backlog, etc.).

  1. Select a Feature to open the details.
  2. Select the Description tab.
  3. Click to add a description, or if a description already exists, select Edit description (pencil icon).
  4. Use the text editor to add a Benefits Hypothesis and any other general information about the Feature.
  5. Select Done.
