Grouper: About Direct and Indirect Groups

A group is a collection of entities: either people or other groups.

There are two relationships within a group: Direct Member and Indirect Member.

A person added to a group is a Direct Member

If Group A is added to Group B, then Group A is a Direct Member of Group B, and all entities in Group A are Indirect Members of Group B.

Example: All members of the "Building-Access" group are permitted door access to a specific building on campus. An individual added to that group is a direct member. Let's say two building maintenance workers are direct members.

In addition to these direct members, the "Building-Access" group also includes two group entities –the "All Faculty" and "All-Staff" managed groups.  These are indirect members of the Building-Access group.

Both direct and indirect members will have access to the specific campus building.

When a new staff or faculty member is added to the "All Staff" or "All Faculty" group,  they will automatically be given proper privileges in Building-Access
