The OIT Drupal platform can host websites using non-umn.edu domain names (e.g., .org, .net) both as primary URLs and as aliases. If you are interested in using any non-umn.edu domains with your Drupal site, please read the guidelines below.
Branding
University Marketing Communications has policies around when umn.edu domains and University branding elements should or should not be used.
- Refer to the MarComm Domains and Branding page.
- If you are unsure how the policies apply to your website, you are responsible for reaching out to their Brand team for consultation.
Site owners are responsible for ensuring compliance with University brand policy.
DNS Records
You will need to create the DNS records via your domain registrar, either directly or via the registrar's customer service. The OIT Drupal team will tell you what records need to be created, but they are unable to do this on your behalf or provide instructions on how to create the records within your registrar's interface.
Note: The OIT Drupal platform proxies all live production traffic through Cloudflare as a Content Delivery Network (CDN) and Web Application Firewall (WAF). The SSL/TLS certificates are managed via Cloudflare. In order to use your domain with the OIT Drupal platform, your DNS records must exist outside of Cloudflare's DNS app. This means that you cannot use Cloudflare Registrar or another domain registrar that uses Cloudflare's DNS infrastructure (e.g., Porkbun). If you are unsure, ask your registrar if they use Cloudflare's DNS infrastructure before you proceed. You may need to transfer your domain name to a different registrar before it can be used with the OIT Drupal platform.
