Canvas: Use a Kaltura Video Quiz in an Assignment

A Kaltura Video Quiz can be used in a Canvas assignment so that students' scores are passed back to the Canvas Gradebook.

Read Kaltura: Create and Manage Video Quizzes to learn how to create a video quiz and read Kaltura: View Video Quiz Responses to learn how to view Kaltura Video Quiz scores, and validate that scores have been sent to the Canvas gradebook.

Creating a Canvas assignment using a Kaltura Video Quiz

  1. Log into canvas.umn.edu and navigate to a Canvas course where you wish to use a Kaltura Video Quiz.
  2. In the Assignments tab, select + Assignment. Do not enter an assignment name or number of points yet, you will do that later.
    • Note: You may enter text and links in the assignment description rich text editor, but when creating an assignment with a Kaltura Video Quiz, do not use the Add Media Using Kaltura button.
  3. Select External Tool as the Submission Type, then select Find.
  4. In the Configure External Tool window that appears, select Kaltura Video Quiz.
Configure external Tool pop-up window. Kaltura Video Quiz selected.
  5. The Link Resource from External Tool window appears. Scroll the list of Kaltura Video Quizzes and select Embed next to the video quiz you wish to use for the assignment.

    • Note: By default, when students play a Kaltura Video Quiz, they cannot access the chapter navigation or transcript viewer features that are available in most other experiences in Kaltura. This is on purpose because students would be able to "look ahead" in those features to find answers to questions. If you want to make chapter navigation and the transcript viewer available for students, on this screen:
      1. Select  Customize to the right of the video quiz you wish to use for the assignment. The Customize Embed page appears.
      2. In the Select a player menu, choose Transcript and chapter navigation enabled.
      3. Consider checking/unchecking the box for Save these settings as defaults for Quiz.
      4. Select Embed.
  6. The Link Resource from External Tool window closes, and the Configure External Tool window appears again. Choose Select.
  7. Complete other assignment settings, including entering an Assignment Name and number of Points, then select Save & Publish.
    • Recommended: Select the checkbox for Load This Tool In A New Tab.

Preventing issues with sending scores to Canvas

In rare cases the student's score is not sent to the Canvas gradebook. The main causes of this failure are when individual students take longer than four hours to complete the video quiz or when they start the video quiz on one device and finish it on another. To help address this, tell your students to:

  1. Complete your quiz attempt in one sitting in less than four hours.
  2. During your video quiz attempt, do not change to another browser or device

Understanding how scores are calculated

True/False and Multiple Choice questions are auto-graded and factored into the score sent to the Canvas Gradebook.

Reflection Points and Open-Ended questions are not factored into the score. Because there is no preview available in SpeedGrader for Video Quizzes, you must use Kaltura Analytics to read entries and adjust the score manually in the Canvas Gradebook.

The score sent to the Canvas Gradebook is a percent value, which is applied to the total points on the assignment.

  • Example: 3 of 4 questions answered correctly is 75%. If the assignment is worth 10 points, 7.5 points are recorded in the Canvas Gradebook.

Using a Kaltura Video Quiz as an extra credit assignment

If you plan to use a Kaltura Video Quiz for extra credit, give the assignment a point value but place it in a weighted assignment group.
