Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system (RDBMS) produced by Microsoft. Its primary query language is T-SQL.
Your database can be hosted centrally on University supported servers. See MSSQL Database Hosting.
The University has purchased SQL Server Device Client Access Licenses (CALs) which cover all current staff, faculty, and students that access databases running SQL Server on University-owned computers.
If you do not utilize Database Hosting Services, SQL server licenses need to be purchased through our Microsoft Select Plus vendor, CDW-G, on the UMarket site.
Availability
Anyone hosting SQL Server 2022 Standard or Enterprise must comply with University IT policies. It is mainly intended for purchase by IT groups.
Anyone accessing a service hosted on SQL Server 2022 Standard or Enterprise must have a SQL Client Access License (CAL). SQL CALs are available for the following account types:

Getting Access
Access to software licensed by the University is based on University affiliation and sometimes the device on which the software is installed.
It is your responsibility to make sure you are using the software in accordance with the University's Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources policy and software terms and conditions, plus any vendor terms listed below.

A University-owned device license for this item can be purchased through the Microsoft Academic Select Plus Program from our reseller, CDWG.
- Go to the UMarket site.
- Select the Shop Now button.
- Sign in with your UMN internet ID and password.
- Scroll to the Electronic Components, A/V, Computer Equipment, Software & Supplies section.
- Select the CDW-G icon.
- Select the PunchOut link.
- On the CDW-G/U Market Ordering Site, select Popular Microsoft Licensing on the left hand side of the screen.
- Select the Microsoft SQL Server link.
- Select Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition. Compare them on the Editions and Supported Features of SQL Server page.
- You can purchase a license with or without maintenance, called "Software Assurance (SA)." SA is purchased for a three-year term and must be renewed every three years. Select licenses that end in with a -3 only, not -3-1.
