Overview
LDAP authentication can provide central authentication for some vendor-provided applications. Many packaged software products can be configured to reference an LDAP directory for authentication.

Leverages users existing University of Minnesota credentials so that you don’t have to manage your users’ accounts and passwords
Your application can get additional information back about users who logged in -- such as name, role, job information, etc. -- that may be useful for access control (may require additional data access approval)
Can leverage access control information from Grouper.
