This article provides information about what devices are impacted by the summer 2025 systemwide deployment of Wi-Fi Protected Access 3 (WPA3) and what actions are available to impacted users.
Devices Impacted by Change to WPA3
With the systemwide deployment of WPA3, some devices released before 2018 may not be able to connect to eduroam. These devices include:
- Android devices running Android 9 or older
- Apple iPhones and iPads running iOS 12 or older
- Apple Macs running macOS 10.14 or older
- Windows PCs running Windows 10 version 1902 or older
Actions for Impacted Device Users
To ensure compatibility with the University Wi-Fi network and be able to connect to eduroam, impacted users should take the following steps:
Check your device's OS version
- Find the specific version of your device's operating system, follow the instructions in this knowledge article Find Your Operating System (OS) Version.
- If your OS can be updated to a newer version, update your device to the newer OS.
Instructions for Impacted Window Users only
After updating your Windows OS, check your Windows Wi-Fi driver version using the steps below:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters pulldown menu.
(Note: Your Wi-Fi adapter could be Intel Wi-Fi, Realtek, Qualcomm Atheros, Broadcom, or something similar.) - Select your wireless adapter.
- Go to the Driver tab and the Wi-Fi Driver version is displayed.
If your driver needs to be updated, update your Wi-Fi Drivers for Windows 10 or 11 from this Intel support article.
Finally, if you have a University-managed device that cannot be updated for business reasons, we recommend using either a wired connection (as opposed to Wi-Fi) or follow the instructions in the Workaround Available section below.
Workaround Available
If your device does not support WPA3 and cannot be upgraded promptly, a workaround is available by connecting to wi-fi networks UofM-Guest or UofM-IoT.
(Note: This workaround is not intended to be a long-term solution as extended use of these older devices also risks availability of upgrades that uphold security compliance.)
If a device appears to be impacted by the transition to WPA3 and following the steps above doesn't result in connection to eduroam, you can contact your department's IT team for assistance or for further questions contact Technology Help using the channels on the How to Get Technology Help page.
