Beginning July 1, 2026, the Office of Information Technology introduced a new Allocation & Buy-In Model for Research Data Storage (RDS).
This replaces the previous "free and unlimited" model with a sustainable and transparent framework that includes a generous, University-funded base allocation and a pay-for-what-you-use model for additional storage consumption.

Understand escalation paths
Escalate support requests regarding storage usage, limits, or shares to TDX Team: T3 Data Management.
Escalate support requests regarding chartstring updates or invoices to TDX Team: OIT Billing.
If you are unsure of the escalation path, escalate to T3 Data Management.
Review storage allocation and billing logic
The first 20TB of storage is provided at no cost to the Data Owner or department, funded entirely through the university Cost Pool.
- Standard Allocation: 20TB per Principal Investigator (PI) or ServiceID.
- Charge Trigger: Charges apply only to data consumption that exceeds the 20TB threshold.
- Billing Cycle: Occurs monthly for the prior month's usage.

- University-funded 20TB allocation per Data Owner
- Each Data Owner receives a 20TB University-funded storage allocation for Research Data Storage. All Research Data Storage associated with that Data Owner is combined to determine total usage against this allocation.
- Overage billing timeline
- Storage consumption exceeding the 20TB threshold will incur monthly charges, billed automatically through standard university financial processes.
- Monitoring usage
- Current storage usage can be reviewed via the Research Data Storage Showback Reports.
