Connect to a College of Design Active Directory Share (Using a Mac)

This article will help Mac users complete the following:

  • Connect and access CDes content on UMN Enterprise File Storage
     
  • Refer to VPN configuration instructions for connecting from off-site

Instructions

  1. On the top menu bar, select Go and then select Connect to Server...

  2. In the Server Address field, enter in the following: smb://files.umn.edu/CDes
     
  3. Click on the + icon to the right of the Server Address field to add that new server to the list of Favorite Servers.

  4. Select the newly added server smb://files.umn.edu/CDes from the list, then select Connect.

    • Note: You may now use steps 1-4 to connect to smb://files.umn.edu/CDes at any time, however, the following steps will provide additional instructions to create a more convenient dock shortcut to access CDes file shares.
       
  5. Enter your username and password, make sure to put AD\ in front of your username.

  6. In the new CDes file share window, click and drag the CDes volume from the window down to the right side of your dock (to the right of the dotted line, near the trash can) to create a dock shortcut.

    • Note: You may wish to change the appearance of the CDes file share icon by right-clicking it and selecting Display as then Folder (instead of Stack).

Additional Information

CDes faculty and staff who wish to connect to UMN Enterprise File Storage from off-campus locations will need to download, install, and configure the University of Minnesota's VPN client.

  • The VPN software download and instructions for Mac OS X users can be found on the Downloads and Guides page.
     
    1. Select the Mac checkbox under Filter by Operating System.
       
    2. Select the Download link for Cisco Secure Client for Mac OS X.
