This document is for instructors who want to use TII for the similarity report and use Canvas' SpeedGrader for grading an assignment. The steps below provide instructions for using the double submission approach with a Turnitin (TII) assignment, which allows instructors to use both the Turnitin Assignment for plagiarism checking and a File Upload Assignment for grading with SpeedGrader in Canvas.
Important: Reach out to your local Academic Technology contact to identify if this option is best for your use case.
Making a TII assignment that will not be calculated in the course grades
Follow these instructions to set up a TII assignment that does NOT count towards the final grade in the course.
- Create the Turnitin Assignment, if you have not already done so, with these instructions:
- Go to Assignments in the course menu.
- Select the three dots in the top right corner near +Assignment.
- Select Turnitin for the assignment type.
- Fill out the assignment name and details accordingly, explaining to students that this assignment submission will allow the instructor to see the originality report but that no grades or feedback will be given on this assignment.
- Save the assignment.
- Return to the Assignments area in your course site.
- Locate the Turnitin Assignment you created in step 1, and click the three-dot ellipses to the far right.
- Select Edit.
- Click More Options.
- Check the checkbox for Do not count this assignment towards the final grade.
- Scroll down and select Save.
Making a File Upload Assignment to use with SpeedGrader
Follow these steps to create a File Upload Assignment in Canvas that is not tied to Turnitin, which allows Teachers or TAs to grade the assignment submission in SpeedGrader.
- Go to Assignments in the course menu.
- Select +Assignment.
- Fill out the assignment name and details accordingly, explaining to students that they need to upload the same assignment file that they used for the Turnitin assignment above.
- Configure applicable points.
- Select Online for Submission Type.
- Select File Uploads for the Online Entry Options.
- Configure applicable Due Dates, Available From and Until dates.
- Scroll down and select Save & Publish.
Communicating the process with students
Instructors should communicate with students to submit their assignment twice, once to the TII Assignment and once to the File Upload Assignment.
- Instructors will use the TII Assignment submission to review the plagiarism report. The TII Assignment will not count towards the student's grade.
- Instructors will grade and give feedback through Canvas SpeedGrader on the File Upload Assignment. The grade for this assignment will be used as the student's grade.
