Overview

Communicator, provided through Clearspan VoIP, is software that allows users to make calls using a University-provided telephone number. (Please note: this tool is no longer the primary voice client supported by OIT. Please see the Webex Teams (formerly Engage) service page for information about the currently supported tool.)

Highlights

Requirements

  • The end user must have a Clearspan account built by OIT
  • The user’s device must be connected to the University’s network (i.e. VPN connection, University WiFi, or directly connected via ethernet port on campus).
  • The user’s device must have working sound equipment (i.e. speakers or headphones) and a working microphone (i.e. internal or external microphone)

Important Information

  • This service does not allow for international long-distance on outbound calls
  • This service is currently not PCI compliant
  • IMPORTANT: Do NOT use Communicator to dial emergency services such as 911. Emergency calls from Communicator may be routed to an incorrect dispatch center, potentially delaying or preventing emergency services. It is recommended that you maintain alternative telephone access for emergency dialing.

Getting Started

  1. Once a request has been received, the Voice and Data team will set up an account.
  2. Then users with a University-provided computer can install software from the Software Center (Windows PCs) or Self-Service (Macs).
  3. With the account-specific credentials provided by the Voice and Data team, users can log in and use their account.

Pricing for the Communicator tool includes an order charge and VoIP line charge.
