The University of Minnesota is implementing Zoom Phone as a replacement for the current telephone and Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) systems (Webex and Communicator).

In recent years, the use of telephones has decreased at the University of Minnesota. Many prefer to use other communication tools, such as video conferencing, chat, text, and email. Some people do not use a telephone for work at all.

Since there are real costs associated with each University telephone account and each physical phone, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) intends to provide replacement telephone accounts and devices only to those who need them. This means not every University employee will have a University telephone number, account, or desk phone.

The Office of Information Technology's Voice Network team will contact leaders in each college, campus or unit to coordinate the transition timing. Each college or unit is empowered to decide which of their faculty, staff, and student employees need VOIP phone service. Those who will begin using Zoom Phone will receive a notification several weeks in advance of their transition.

Please Note – Users with the Healthcare Component (HCC) Zoom accounts will not have the ability to utilize the following Zoom Phone features: Voicemail to Email, Fax to Email and SMS Texting. Zoom Phone usage is also limited to desk phones and via the Zoom Workplace application on a laptop only.
