OpenAI ensures that no data entered in the University of Minnesota ChatGPT Edu workspace is used to train its models.

ChatGPT Edu is available to faculty, staff, and graduate students with an EFS chartstring.

All tiers allow credit-free use of instant chat (the default model) in a University-approved, protected workspace. Also, each subscription includes five free Deep Research requests and three free image generations per rolling 24-hour period

Codex

Codex is OpenAI's agentic coding tool to write and review code that is included with ChatGPT Edu. Codex has its own pricing, which may have higher costs than regular ChatGPT Edu usage.

The University of Minnesota offers several subscription tiers of ChatGPT Edu, depending on your need for advanced features.

If you exhaust your monthly credits, your access to advanced features is paused until the last day of the previous month at 7 p.m.

Changing tiers or opting out

Changing tiers is possible by submitting a request.

Tier changes take effect on the last day of the month at 7 p.m.

To opt out, submit a ChatGPT Edu Request Form request to be removed. If you do not opt out before the next monthly billing, your chartstring will be charged.
