ChatGPT Edu: Transition an existing ChatGPT Plus account to ChatGPT Edu
You can transition an existing ChatGPT Plus account to a University-licensed ChatGPT Edu account. Learn more about ChatGPT Edu at the University of Minnesota.
Copying ChatGPT history and data in preparation
It’s recommended to export a copy of your data prior to migrating your account and/or accepting the email invitation link provided by ChatGPT Edu.
In your account that you plan to stop using, follow OpenAI's instructions to export your data.
Data considerations
Consider if you want to move your data
- Upon accepting the ChatGPT Edu invitation, you will be prompted to either move your history/data to the new space or start with a blank space.
- You must either migrate all of your history or none of it.
Irreversible merge
Once merged, the process is irreversible. Backing up your data and history beforehand is highly recommended.
Once your UMN account is migrated to the ChatGPT Edu space, you will not be able to migrate back to a ChatGPT personal account. You will also not be able to make a copy of your Edu history and data.
Transitioning ChatGPT Plus history and data to ChatGPT Edu
You can merge your existing ChatGPT when you move to the University’s ChatGPT Edu. This step is optional; you can choose to start with a blank space with no history in Edu.
Follow the steps below to migrate data from ChatGPT Plus to ChatGPT Edu:
- Submit a request to receive an email invitation for ChatGPT Edu. Use your University email when submitting the request.
- Accept the invitation and log into the ChatGPT Edu workspace.
- ChatGPT Edu will prompt you to merge existing ChatGPT data (chat history, custom GPTs, etc.) into the Edu workspace.
