General Information

Autodesk provides a wide range of design tools, including AutoCAD to be used in the fields of manufacturing, industrial design, architecture, construction, and civil engineering.

Autodesk provides their software FREE of charge to secondary and post-secondary institutions for the purposes of Teaching, Training, Learning, Research, and Development.

As of September 22, 2014 no one should be using Autodesk software previously purchased and obtained through OIT.  You must migrate your installation of Autodesk products over to products found through the provided links below. 

INDIVIDUALS: Free Software (roughly 85 titles) for Educators is available here for the exclusive use for UMN Learning, Teaching, Training, Research & Development.  If you are interested in other Autodesk software titles, contact a reseller or local distributor for more information about pricing and availability.  Our current reseller is MasterGraphics.

DEPARTMENTS: If you want to manage the Autodesk software for your faculty/staff that need to use Autodesk software for UMN Learning, Teaching, Training, Research & Development you can create an account through the Autodesk Academic Resource Center (ARC) by creating an account here.   *When signing up you will need to click through a Terms & Conditions agreement.  OIT has already reviewed the terms and requested that Autodesk make a few minor changes.  Autodesk was not able to make these legal changes, so we requested and they agreed to keep a T&C amendment side-letter on file for the University of Minnesota, because of this please feel free to 'click-through' without obtaining review from the Office of the General Counsel (OGC).  

Information on signing up: When adding an Educational institution to manage:

  1. Choose Type as Postsecondary,
  2. Educational Institutional name as 'Other'
  3. then type in 'University of Minnesota',
  4. second, enter your college or departments UMN web address,
  5. then enter your Department name (acronym is fine) & Discipline if appropriate. 

IF you want OIT to add information to this website about your ARC agreement, such as who people in your unit should talk to about getting software from you, please email software@umn.edu

Facilities Management & Administrative user of Autodesk should have all migrated off of our previous license and have entered into a new license direct with Autodesk through MasterGraphics.  IF you have NOT yet done so - contact software@umn.edu immediately and we will put you in contact with MasterGraphics.

Students: Join the Student Engineering and Design Community and download some of the Autodesk/AutoCAD software free from the Autodesk Web site.  This is fully functional software, however a watermark appears on printouts.  There are 84 programs available for you to download from this site.  Once on the site you can view all 84, or filter by categories such as Popular, Apps, Cloud services, Desktop products, etc.
