UMN Account Holders Under 18 Require Parent/Guardian Consent to Access Some Google Services

Effective for the 2025-2026 academic year, the University of Minnesota has implemented age-based restrictions on Google Workspace for Education accounts in order to comply with Google’s Terms of Service. These restrictions are required to ensure compliance with privacy and safety regulations that protect minors when parent/guardian consent has not been obtained.

Who Is Impacted?

  • Degree-seeking students under 18
  • Non-degree seeking students under 18, including dual enrollment students such as Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) and College in the School students
  • Non-student employees under 18

What Has Changed?

Impacted students and employees may experience changes in the functionality of some Google services. Non-core apps such as YouTube, Google Search, Google Translate, Google Maps and 30+ additional Google services will provide a restricted experience to some apps; and no access to other Google services for individuals under 18 unless parental consent is received

Google’s core services (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Drive, and others listed on Google Workspace’s Services Summary page under Core Services) are not impacted by age restrictions and will continue to be accessible.

Learn more about this change on Google's Control access to Google services by age page.

In addition, third-party services that connect to your Google account, including browser extensions such as Honorlock or Zoom, various drive utilities, and others, may be blocked for under-18 users according to our agreement with Google unless parental consent is received

How To Submit Consent

Impacted students should download the Consent Form (PDF), and provide it to a parent or guardian for signature. The signed form must be uploaded on the Access Request Form page. Access to additional services will be available within one (1) business day after you submit the signed form.
