Overview

NotebookLM is a knowledge assistant that provides document analysis using artificial intelligence (AI).

NotebookLM supports research, teaching, learning, and administrative work by allowing you to ask AI-powered questions to pinpoint specific information and discover themes and relationships within your information, as well as quickly summarize content and assist with notetaking. 

You can also share Notebooks with others!   

Highlights

NotebookLM can:

  • Create a Notebook based on your uploaded source information.​
  • Automatically generate a summary of all your source information.
  • Create outputs based on your uploaded sources. Note: The outputs created by NotebookLM and are not editable within the tool once they have been created.
    • Audio overview (podcast format).
    • FAQ, study guide, table of contents, timeline, or briefing document.
    • Notes and summaries.
    • Mind maps.
  • Answer questions based on your source information.
  • Add or delete sources in your Notebook.

Data Protections & HIPAA Compliance

Data classification types you can add to NotebookLM: Public, Private-Restricted

At this time, NotebookLM is not compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

When using the NotebookLM web app with your University account, your uploads, queries, and the model's responses in NotebookLM will not be reviewed by human reviewers and will not be used to train generative AI models.

Logging into NotebookLM with a personal (non-UMN) Google account will not have the same data protections. When using NotebookLM, you can check that you are signed in using your University account by hovering over the account avatar in the top right corner and verifying it is your umn.edu account. 

Enterprise data protection ensures:

  • Uploaded source documents and user interaction data are not used to train Google’s language models.
  • Uploaded source documents and user interaction data are not accessible or reviewed by any humans at Google.
  • Uploaded source documents and user interaction data are not made available to other users or the organization.
  • User interactions with NotebookLM will not be reviewed by anyone at the University.

Academic Materials

While you can upload various academic materials to NotebookLM, it doesn’t mean that it is allowed by the original publishers of the materials.

Publishers typically prohibit (through licensing) upload of research, magazine and newspaper articles (including those used for course readings) to third-party services like Gemini and NotebookLM. Do not upload materials produced by others or licensed materials unless you have explicit permission or the material is covered under a known exemption or license.

Getting Started

  • To gain access, fill out the opt-in form.
    • After submitting the form, you will have access to NotebookLM using your University account.
  • Visit notebooklm.google.com to access NotebookLM.
