Wide Area Network: Internet2

The University of Minnesota is one of over 200 universities that are members of the not-for-profit advanced networking consortium Internet2. The consortium provides the U.S. research and education community with a network that is capable of satisfying the bandwidth requirements that are needed to use high-performance applications.

Internet2 "dedicated resources" (network capacity that is dedicated to specific application and therefore does not have to be shared) allow researchers to transfer data at higher speeds than is capable with "regular old" Internet backbones.
