If you need to change your internet ID password, you can reset it on your own through our self-service password reset system.
If you know your current password, start by logging in to My-Account.

Reset your Internet ID password
- Click Reset your password on any University of Minnesota sign-in or go to My-Account. The Recover Your Password page will be displayed.
- Enter your Internet ID or alternate email address.
Note: If you have set up an alternate or "home" email address for your UMN internet account, you may enter that email address. - Select Submit.
- Answer the three password reset questions that you have set up.
- If you have not set up your password reset questions and do not have an alternate email address, you will need to change your password over the phone.

- Enter a new password in the New Password field.
Note: Select Show password requirements to learn more about creating a strong password. - Retype your new password in the Confirm New Password field.
- Select Submit. A message confirming the successful change to your Internet password will appear.
Non-Credit (Guest) password reset
- Click Reset your password on any University of Minnesota sign-in or go to My-Account. The Recover Your Password page will be displayed.
- Enter your email address in the field titled Internet ID.
Note: This is the email address you used when you initially created your account. - Select Submit. You will receive an email with a temporary password and instructions for resetting it.
- Follow the instructions in the email to log into My-Account and reset your password.
If you are trying to reset your password while connected via WiFi and your password is not resetting, connect to the internet via a wired connection first, and then you should be able to reset your password. If you continue to have issues, please call the Technology Help (612-301-4357).
Troubleshoot common password reset errors
If you are attempting to reset your password while connected via WiFi and you are unable to get your password to reset, connect to the Internet via a wired connection first, and then you should be able to reset your password. You may get a variety of error messages when attempting to reset your password. Follow the solutions below to successfully reset your password.
Password reset questions page error
This error message appears on the page that asks you to answer all three password reset questions and to set a new password. Even though the error message says "there was 1 error," it will appear for any of the following errors:
- One or more of the password reset question answers are incorrect.
- Your new password does not follow the password requirements.
- Your new password is not correctly typed in the Confirm New Password field.
Carefully re-enter all information into the fields on the page and click Submit to retry changing your password.
Password Requirements Error
Any of these messages mean that your new password does not meet the requirements for passwords. Try a different password according to the listed requirements:
- Must be at least 16 character(s) long.
- The first character of the password should be a letter.
- Must contain at least 2 alphabetic characters total, 1 of which must be an uppercase letter (A-Z)
- Must not contain any of the user ID, first name or last name when their length is larger than 2 (for example, if your user ID is john001, the new password cannot contain the characters "joh" but could include "jo").
- Must not be one of 5 previous passwords used for the account.
