Remove the Google Workspace Device Policy App for Android Devices

On October 26, 2021 Google will be retiring the Google Device Policy App. It will be replaced by the new Android Device Policy App. If you have an Apple device, you will not need to remove the app at this time. 

If you currently need to use the Google Device Policy App in order to access Google Apps on your personal smartphone or Tablet you will need to uninstall the Google Device Policy App following these instructions, and then install the new app before this deadline if you wish to continue using your Google Apps apps on these devices.

Notes: 

  • Prior to following these steps, it is recommended that you make a note of the applications you use in the workspace profile.
    • When you install the Android Device Policy App, it will only load default applications (Gmail, Calendar, Chrome, Camera, etc) 
  • The Android Device Policy app requires Android M (Also known as 6.0 or Marshmallow) or higher.
  • With the Android Device Policy app, you will no longer see a Device Policy app in your app drawer. The new management system and Android Device Policy app will be integrated with Android for a more seamless experience.

Uninstalling the Google Workspace Device Policy App

  1. Open the  Device Policy App, on your Android device.
  2. Open the  menu and select Status.
  3. Touch Unregister for each account you have registered with the device.

  4. Open the Settings App on your device
  5. Depending on your device, go to one of the following:
    • Settings then Applications then Manage Applications.
    • Settings then Apps.

  6. Select the  Device Policy App.
  7. Tap Uninstall or Disable and then OK to remove it.
    • If neither of the above steps allow you to uninstall the application you can:
      1. Go to your home screen.
      2. Swipe up to access your applications list.
      3. Find  Device Policy
      4. Press and hold the app to bring up an actions menu
      5. Select Uninstall.

Once these steps are complete, you can follow the guide to install the new Android Device Policy App.
