IPv6 Network Addressing: Opportunity Statement

  • We have little choice other than to adopt IPv6
  • Many colleges and countries currently use IPv6
  • The world population is 6,778,000,000
  • There are 4,294,976,296 IPv4 addresses available world wide
  • The University has outgrown IPv4 and is at 98% allocation
  • The University is unable to acquire additional IPv4 address space
  • There are 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 IPv6 addresses available world wide
  • Adopting IPv6 is aligned with the University of Minnesota's goal of becoming one of the top three research Universities. It will be important for us to use IPv6 in as many of our communications as possible.
