Duo: Add a new phone (or reactivate Duo)

Congratulations on your new phone!  Here's how to enroll it in Duo.

My new phone has the same number as my old phone

If you are keeping the same phone number, you'll need to reactivate Duo Mobile on your new phone.

  1. Download the free Duo Mobile app onto your new phone.  Duo icon
  2. Use an internet browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox) to sign into my-account.umn.edu with your UMN Internet ID and password. 
  3. Authenticate with Duo (Since DUO isn't set up on the old phone, select the "Call Me" option).
  4. Scroll down to the Duo Security menu in the left navigation menu. Click on it to expand it.

  5. Select Create or Manage Duo Account.  You may need to authenticate again (using your own phone) before you can access the Self-Service area.
  6. Find your old phone in the list, and click the blue Device Options button next to it.

  7. Select Reactivate Duo Mobile.

NOTE: if you do not have a second device, use a bypass code.

From this point on, the process is the same as adding a new device.

My new phone has a different phone number

If you're planning on keeping both phones active, simply add your new phone to your approved Duo devices. 

If you will not be using your old phone number again, then you will need to first add your new phone and then un-enroll the old phone.

If you no longer have the old number or device, contact Technology Help.

Add your new phone

  1. Download the free Duo Mobile app onto your new phone. Duo icon
  2. Use an internet browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox) to sign into my-account.umn.edu with your UMN Internet ID and password.
  3. Authenticate with Duo (using your old phone, since Duo isn't set up on your new one yet).
  4. Scroll down to find the Duo Security menu in the left navigation menu, then click to expand it.Self service menu
  5. Select Create or Manage Duo Account.  You may need to authenticate again (using your old phone) before you can access the Self-Service area.
  6. Click the small Add another device link.
  7. Choose Mobile phone.
  8. Enter your phone number, confirm it is correct, and then click Continue.
  9. Select your device's operating system (iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, Other).
  10. Setup will ask whether you have installed the Duo Mobile App.
        a. If you have completed this step already, click I have Duo Mobile installed.
        b. If not, download the Duo Mobile app on your phone before continuing.
  11. A QR code will appear on your screen. Open the Duo Mobile app on your phone and click the + button at the top of the app screen.

  12. Hold your phone (camera toward the screen) up to the QR code to scan it.

  13. Click Continue. Your smartphone will now be listed as a device to use for Duo authentication.
  14. If you like, you can change your device name to something descriptive by clicking Device Options and then Change Device Name.

I can't scan the QR code!

  1. Click the link that says Or, have an activation link emailed to you instead.
  2. Enter your email address.
  3. Use your mobile device to check your email. Click on the link you receive.

  4. If your phone asks which App to use to open the link, select Duo Mobile.
  5. Duo Mobile will open. Click Continue to finish the enrollment process.

Un-enroll your old phone

  1. Use an internet browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox) to sign into my-account.umn.edu with your UMN Internet ID and password.
  2. Authenticate with Duo.
  3. Scroll down to find the Duo Security menu in the left navigation menu, and click on Duo Security to expand it (view the dropdown menu).Self service menu
  4. Select Create or Manage Duo Account.  You may need to authenticate again before you can access the Self-Service area.
  5. Once you are in the Create or Manage area, select My Settings & Devices.
  6. Click the Device Options button next to the device you want to remove.

  7. Once the Device Options menu opens, click the maroon icon that looks like a garbage can.
  8. Confirm that you really want to remove this device.  When your device has been removed, a green confirmation message will appear at the bottom of the screen.
