Media Galleries are areas to post, view, and search Kaltura videos related to specific courses in Canvas.
Only people enrolled in the Canvas course have access to a course site's Media Gallery. Users may view and search video content in Media Galleries.
When captions are added to videos in the Media Gallery, the text becomes searchable. This allows users to access videos using specific language - a feature that can be used for content review purposes.
Media Galleries appear in Canvas. In the course menu, many courses have a Media Gallery link. Media galleries may be turned on or off. See additional resources for more information about Kaltura course tools and how to add a Media Gallery.
Roles in Canvas:
- Teachers/TAs/Designers can post videos to Media Galleries. Instructors can approve student postings to a Media Gallery.
- Students can post to Media Galleries if instructors approve the media or modify the course settings to allow posts without review.

Viewing Videos in Canvas Kaltura Media Galleries
- Open a browser and go to Canvas (canvas.umn.edu). You may need to sign in.
- Find your media gallery:
- Select the Courses icon in the left navigation bar. All of your available courses will appear.
- Select the course you want.
- Select Media Gallery from the course navigation menu.
- Select the a video's thumbnail to view it.
Searching Video Contents in Kaltura Media Galleries
- Open a browser and go to Canvas (canvas.umn.edu). You may need to sign in.
- Find your media gallery:
- Select the Courses icon in the left navigation bar. All of your available courses will appear.
- Select the course you want.
- Select Media Gallery from the course navigation menu.
- If there are playlists in the Media Gallery, you will have a Home tab and a Media tab at the top of the page. Select the Media tab to find the Search field to search all Kaltura media in the Media Gallery.
- Enter a search term in the Search this gallery field and this will search all fields within the videos.
- If you are seeing the Show More link within your search result, this means that there are possible results within the captions.
- Clicking on Show More will expand the menu and give results within the captions.
- Clicking on a specific Time Stamp within the results will bring you to that point within the video.
- If you want more Time Stamps, click on Show All to get a comprehensive list.
- Clicking on a specific Time Stamp within the results will bring you to that point within the video.
- If you are seeing the Show More link within your search result, this means that there are possible results within the captions.
Searching for Content within a Video
In Canvas Kaltura, you can limit a search to a single video within Media Gallery.
- Find the video you want to search in the Media Gallery.
- Select the video thumbnail.
- Select the magnifying glass icon next to Details, below the video.
- Enter your search terms.
- The results list will have links to exact time markers in the video that contain the search terms you used.
