Canvas: Apply a Grading Scheme to Your Course

For most courses, you will want to use the University of Minnesota Letter Grade Scheme which is the approved undergraduate grading scheme for the University. An S-N Grade Scheme is also available or you can create and apply your own scheme.

  • Note: If you imported a Moodle course into Canvas, any grading scales you used in Moodle will not have copied over. You may need to create equivalent scales in Canvas.

Applying the University of Minnesota Letter Grade Scheme

  1. Click Settings in the Course Navigation.
  2. Select the Course Details tab if necessary.
  3. Scroll down to Grading Scheme and check the box for Enable course grading scheme.

  4. Click set grading scheme. A window opens displaying the default grading scheme.
    • If you want to use this grading scheme, skip to Step 8. Otherwise,
  5. Click Select Another Scheme (top right).
  6. Select University of Minnesota Letter Grade Scheme.
  7. Click Use This Grading Standard.
  8. Click Done. The Settings page reappears.
  9. Click Update Course Details at the bottom of the Settings page.

By default, students can view the grade distribution graph. If desired, you can Hide grade distribution scoring details from students.

Creating and applying your own course grading scheme

    1. Click Settings in the Course Navigation.
    2. Select the Course Details tab if necessary.
    3. Scroll down to Grading Scheme and check the box for Enable course grading scheme.
    4. Click set grading scheme link. A window opens displaying the default grading scheme.
    5. Click manage grading schemes (bottom right).

    6. Click +Add grading scheme (top right).
      1. Type a name for your unique grading scheme.
      2. Change grading values as needed.
      3. Click SaveYou will now need to navigate back to the Settings area to select your new grading scheme for use.

 

  1. Click Settings, scroll down to Grading Scheme and check the box for Enable course grading scheme.
  2. Click set grading scheme.
  3. Click Select Another Scheme (top right).
    1. Click on the title of the grading scheme you just made.
    2. Click Use This Grading Standard.
    3. Click DoneThe Settings page reappears.
  4. Click Update Course Details at the bottom of the Settings page.

By default, students can view the grade distribution graph. If desired, you can Hide grade distribution scoring details from students.
