Guest accounts provide limited access to select applications and services for those who do not have a formal relationship with the University of Minnesota. They are most-often used for access to non-credit courses.

How do I enroll in Training Hub courses with my guest account?

How can I create a guest account to register for continuing education/professional development courses?  

If you do not already have a University of Minnesota account, a guest account can be created to register for and access the Destiny One Registration System's catalogue of non-credit professional development and personal enrichment courses at learning.umn.edu.

You can create your guest account either on the learning.umn.edu Login portal (select Create Account under "I'm new to the University") or by following the steps on this page under Creating a Guest Account

Can I log into MyU with my guest account?

No. Guest accounts cannot log into myu.umn.edu

How do I access Canvas with my guest account?

To access Canvas for courses registered under your guest account, visit canvas.umn.edu

Can I change what email address my guest account is tied to?

Yes. You can change the email address your guest account is tied to by modifying your guest account information (on this page)

Do guest accounts ever expire?

Yes. Guest accounts expire annually. You will receive an email notification when your guest account is approaching its expiration date. 

You can extend your account's expiration date as necessary by modifying your guest account information (on this page).

Can I close my guest account?

Yes. You may wish to disable a guest account for a variety of reasons, such as if the account is a duplicate.

If you wish to close your guest account, you can disable your guest account (on this page) via self-service. 

Can I use Duo Security multi-factor authentication with my guest account?

No. Guest accounts are unfortunately not eligible to use Duo Security multi-factor authentication. 

Can I use my guest account for parent/guest access to my University of Minnesota student's information?

No. Guest accounts do not provide parent/guest (proxy) access to student information and cannot be used to accept a parent/guest access invitation.

Creating a Guest Account

You can create a guest account by filling out the Create Guest Account form. Before creating a guest account, keep the following in mind:

  • Guest accounts only provide limited access to University of Minnesota sites, systems, and resources. 
    • Note that guest accounts are NOT be able to access the MyU portal
  • Guest accounts cannot be used for parent/guest access for your student's information. 
  • Do not use an email address that is already an alternate email address for an existing University of Minnesota account (such as an account that may be tied to your academic or employment records).

To create a new guest account:

  1. Open the Create Guest Account form
    My-Account, Create Guest Account form. There are many text entry fields, including for first name, middle initial (optional), last name, email address, and phone number.

  2. Enter your information for all text entry fields. 
    • Be careful to avoid typos in areas like the Email Address field. 
  3. Click Submit after entering all personal and password information.

  4. You will receive an email notification after submitting the form confirming the successful creation of your guest account. After receiving the email notification, your guest account is ready to use.

Changing the Password

I know the current password for my guest account and want to change it.

  1. Log in to my-account.umn.edu with your account's associated email address as the Internet ID and your current password.
  2. Select Password Management from the grey menu bar. 
  3. Select Reset Your UMN Password
  4. Enter the Current Password and create a New Password
  5. Click Submit to save changes. 

Help! I don't know the current password for my guest account and need to reset it. 

  1. Go to my-account.umn.edu.
  2. Click on the Forgot your password? button below the Password entry field.

  3. Enter your alternate email address.

  4. Click the Submit button.
  5. If successful, a temporary password will be emailed to your alternate email address.

Modifying Guest Account Information

If you are able to log into your University of Minnesota guest account, you can update your account information via self-service.

You can update your contact information (such as your alternate email address, phone number, and address), update your name (to reflect any name changes or fix spelling mistakes), and extend the expiration date of your account (to enable continued access). 

To modify your guest account information:

  1. Log into your guest account at my-account.umn.edu.
  2. Select Modify Guest Account
    My Account, view when logged in as a guest account. Menu options for User Details, Password Management, and Modify Guest Account (highlighted).
  3. Update any fields necessary. You can update the following fields:
    • First Name
    • Middle Initial
    • Last Name
    • Phone Number
    • Email Address
    • Country/Address
    • Expiration Date
  4. Select Submit to save changes.

Extending the Account Expiration Date

Guest accounts expire annually. You will receive an email notification indicating that your guest account will expire. Automated emails will be sent before account expiration at the following times:

  • 2 weeks before
  • 1 week before
  • 3 days before
  • 1 day before

You can use the link in the email notification to modify your account (on this page) and extend the expiration date. 

If your your guest account has already expired:

  1. Attempt self-service password recovery (on this page). This automatically reactivates the account in most cases.

  2. If you are still unable to log into your guest account, contact Technology Help for assistance. 

Disabling Your Guest Account

You may wish to disable or close your guest account for a variety of reasons. For example:

  • You wish to accept a parent/guest access invitation, but the email address you received the invitation at is already associated with your guest account.
  • You wish to enable self-service password recovery options for another account, but your guest account is tied to the email address you want to use.
  • You have multiple guest accounts and want to close the duplicate account(s). 
  • You no longer wish to use your guest account.

To close your guest account via self-service:

  1. Log into your guest account at my-account.umn.edu.

  2. Select Modify Guest Account
    My Account, view when logged in as a guest account. Menu options for User Details, Password Management, and Modify Guest Account (highlighted).
  3. Update the following fields:
    • Email Address
      • To completely unlink your email address from the account, add or remove letters to make the email address invalid (for example: change [email protected] to [email protected]).
      • If you may want to recover this account in the future, either leave the existing email address in this field or input another valid email address.
    • Expiration Date
      • Set the expiration date to today's date. The account will expire within the next 24 hours. 
  4. Select Submit to save changes.

Updating Inaccessible Accounts

If you are unable to access your University of Minnesota guest account, attempt self-service password recovery (on this page)

If you no longer have access to the email address tied to your account, you may need to create a new guest account
