Overview

University employees who work with Protected Health Information (PHI) as part of their job responsibilities are able to send email messages using the Proofpoint Secure Email Center.  Sharing PHI via email should be avoided whenever possible, but this new security feature is available for situations when email is the only available option.

Highlights

  • Send Secure Email: Proofpoint Secure Email Center uses software to secure email messages containing protected health information (PHI). To activate Proofpoint’s encryption, simply enter umnsecure or umpsecure in the subject line of your email.
  • Receive Secure Email: When someone sends you an email using Proofpoint Secure Email Center, instead of receiving the email directly in your inbox you will receive an email notification from Proofpoint. The notification will include a link that takes you to the Proofpoint website where you can login to securely view the contents of the email.
  • HIPAA Compliant: Using Proofpoint Secure Email Center ensures that the University is in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which requires that patient personal health information (PHI) be secured.
