Opt-In Alumni Email Account

For a limited time, the University of Minnesota is offering an alumni.umn.edu email account (Gmail and contacts only) to people who had the expectation of continued access to their University of Minnesota email account after they graduate or retire.

Alumni accounts serve the University's goal of improved security because they are not connected to other University technologies or services. Standard University of Minnesota Gmail accounts are integrated with technologies and services.

About Alumni Accounts

University of Minnesota alumni accounts offer Gmail and contacts and provide 5 GB of storage. Other Google Workspace applications such as Drive, YouTube, Jamboard, etc. are not included.

  Requirements

If you are eligible to create an opt-in alumni account, you will need the following:

A non-UMN email account

To enroll, you will need to provide a non-UMN alternate email address. This is required because it will enable you to recover your alumni email account password. If you do not already have a non-UMN email account, you must create one before you attempt to create an alumni account. Any active non-UMN email account is acceptable, it does not need to be a Gmail account.

Two-Step Verification

Google requires that you set up two-step verification to access your Gmail account. If you decide to create an alumni account, you will be asked to set up two-step verification as part of the process.

Account Usage Required to Retain Access

To retain access to a UMN alumni email you must sign in to the account at least once every 180 days. If you do not, the account will be permanently closed.
