Participating Departments

The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) and the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) have purchased licenses for their collegiate units. Current graduate students, staff, or faculty in CLA should email [email protected] to find out how to request the software. Current graduate students, staff, or faculty in CEHD should email [email protected] to find out how to request the software.

Other Departments

1. Order licenses on our Kivuto-hosted webstore.
2. Information supplied with license purchase will include keys for downgrades to earlier versions if available.

Instructions for Employees

Faculty and staff should contact Lumivero directly to purchase NVivo for personal use.

If you will use this software exclusively for UMN teaching, learning, or research and you want to install it on a personally owned device, follow the Instructions for Departments above.

Data Privacy Restrictions

UIS has conducted a vendor risk assessment and determined that for the University of Minnesota, NVivo is not approved for use with Private-Highly Restricted Data, including PHI.

Compatibility Issues 

NVivo recommends that teams working with NVivo use the same version of the software and do not work cross-platform. For example, there are significant compatibility issues when transferring NVivo project files from Mac operating systems via Box. The file is likely to become corrupted and unable to be downloaded from Box for use or for conversion for use on a PC. Should secure file transfer be necessary, alternative file transfer processes may be required. This is only an issue from Mac to Box, PC versions of NVivo can be successfully shared via Box.
