Zoom: Share Device Sound During Screen Share

You can use Zoom to share your desktop, window, or application with meeting attendees. If you are sharing a video or audio clip from a website such as YouTube or Pandora, the audio from that clip can be shared through Zoom as well. In order to use this feature, you must use the Zoom Client on a Mac or Windows PC the share computer sound during screen share feature is not accessible through the Zoom web client.

Note: Due to security restrictions, iPads owned by Health Sciences (HST) are unable to share their screen in Zoom.

Share Music or Computer Audio Only

  1. Select the Share Screen button in the toolbar

  2. Select Advanced and choose Music or Computer Sound Only

  3. To stop sending audio, simply select Stop Share at the top of your meeting screen or mute the speaker of your phone or the speaker of your PC or MAC.

Sharing Screen and Audio

Note: If multiple screens are being shared, the sound from any particular screen can not be shared.

  1. Select the Share Screen button in the toolbar

  2. Check the box to Share computer sound at the bottom of the Share Screen pop-up window.
    1. If you are going to share a video clip, also check Optimize Screen Share for Video Clip.

  3. Make sure your volume is an appropriate level. 
  4. If you are trying to share a video (such as YouTube), make sure the screen is visible to participants. What participants see is outlined in green:

Sharing iOS Device's Screen and Audio on Computer via AirPlay

There may be times when you would like to share a separate screen, such as your iPad or iPhone screen. Currently screen sharing audio through Zoom is not available on Android.

Note: Your computer and iOS Device need to connected to the same WiFi network when screen sharing via AirPlay

  1. Select the Share button in the toolbar

  2. Check the box to Share computer sound at the bottom of the Share pop-up window
  3. Select iPhone/iPad via AirPlay

  4. Select Share in the bottom right corner
  5. On your iPhone/iPad select Screen Mirroring and choose Zoom-[your computer name]
    • Find Screen Mirroring by swiping down on the top right corner of your iPhone/iPad's screen.
  6. To stop sending audio, simply select Stop Share at the top of your meeting screen.

Sharing iOS Device's Screen and Audio on Computer via Cable

Sharing screen audio through Zoom on an iPhone/iPad via cable is currently available on Mac but is not currently available on PC devices.

Note: Due to security restrictions, iPads owned by Health Science Tecnology (HST) are unable to share their screen in Zoom. For more information on this, please contact Technology Help.

  1. Use your charging cable to plug your iPhone/iPad into the computer
  2. Select the Share button in the toolbar

  3. Check the box to Share computer sound at the bottom of the Share pop-up window
  4. Select iPhone/iPad via Cable

  5. Select Trust on your iPhone/iPad to say you trust this computer.
  6. Enter your iPhone/iPad's password on your iPhone/iPad if prompted
  7. Select Share in the bottom right corner of your computer's Zoom Screen Sharing window.
  8. To stop sending audio, simply select Stop Share at the top of your meeting screen.

Sharing via iOS (iPhone/iPad) Zoom App

Follow Zoom's instructions for iOS Screen Sharing.

  • You must choose the Screenshare option to get the audio sharing option. If you pick one of the other options (i.e. Website) it will only share the screen and not audio

Note: Sharing your screen will also share any notifications on your screen so we recommend turning on Do not Disturb before sharing.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is screen sharing audio available through Zoom's web client?
    • No, sharing screen audio is not currently available on the Zoom web client. Use the Zoom Desktop App or Zoom mobile app on iOS instead. Sharing screen audio through Zoom is not available on Android.
  • Is screen sharing audio available through Android?
    • No, screen sharing audio through Zoom is not available on Android.
  • Can I talk while screen-sharing audio?
    • Yes, you can talk and screen-share audio at the same time. You can mute yourself from talking and still leave the audio of the screenshare on. Or you can unmute yourself and talk over the screenshared sound.
  • If I mute myself in Zoom while screen-sharing audio will it mute the audio as well?
    • No, Zoom's mute/unmute button will only mute/unmute your voice. Muting yourself has no impact on the audio you are screensharing. To stop sharing the audio you need to either pause it directly in the app (i.e. YouTube), or stop the screenshare.
  • How do I change the volume of screen-shared audio?
    • Sharing Computer Audio:
      • Change the volume within the app itself (i.e. YouTube)
      • Note: Changing your computer's volume only changes the volume for yourself in the meeting, but to make the volume different for participants listening to your screenshare you need to change the volume in-app.

    • Sharing iPhone/iPad Audio:
      • If you are AirPlaying or Cabling an iPhone/iPad then use the iPhone/iPad's volume controls to change the screen shared audio volume.
    • To change the volume of the screen share you need to change the volume within the app. 
  • Can I still share my screen-share audio if I'm wearing headphones?
    • Yes, if wearing headphones you can still share your screen's audio. If you want to talk while screensharing, use Zoom's mute/unmute feature.
  • How do I share computer sound if I'm connected to the meeting via telephone?
  • I paused my screen share but participants can still hear the audio.
    •  If this happens, you can either pause the audio in the app at the source, or you can mute yourself on Zoom so participants do not hear the audio feedback.
    • When using Pause Screen Share, your shared audio may still come through to participants via the microphone if you are using speakers.
  • To share a video from YouTube:
    • You will need to use a browser like Chrome or Safari.
      Note: The integration will not allow for videos to play in full-screen mode. To share the window containing YouTube, select the internet browser window (i.e. Chrome, Safari, IE, Firefox) instead of the desktop (Mac) or screen (Windows).

Troubleshooting

  • Issue: To share your computer audio, please install the Zoom audio device.
    • This error occurs on Macs when connecting iPhone/iPad via Cable or via AirPlay.
    • Solution: Go to System Preferences > Security and Privacy > Screen Recording and enable Zoom.
    • Note: You will need to close out of Zoom and reopen Zoom for the changes to take effect. 
  • Issue: A plugin is required to share an iPhone/iPad screen.
    • This error occurs on PCs when connecting iPhone/iPad via AirPlay.
    • Solution: Select Install in the popup to finish installing the plugin. 
    • Note: You will need to close out of Zoom and reopen Zoom for the changes to take effect. 
  • Issue: The option to Trust is not appearing on your iPhone/iPad when connecting to your Mac via Cable.
