This guide is intended for those who utilize Chromebooks and other ChromeOS devices to use Cisco AnyConnect to configure the Virtual Private Networking (VPN) service on your device. For assistance in connecting, including Login Failed messages, contact Technology Help for assistance.
Note: Cisco will no longer support Chromebooks by March 31st, 2025. It is recommended to connect using Android Apps instead for VPN Secure Client to avoid disruption.
Note: All Departmental Pools, Full Tunnel VPN, and Split Tunnel VPN Pools require Multi-factor authentication (MFA) through Duo Security to connect.

Connecting to ChromeOS for the First Time
To connect to UMN VPN using the Cisco AnyConnect app, follow the steps below. If you need to download the client, visit Install AnyConnect VPN for Chrome first and install AnyConnect before connecting.
Now that the client is installed, you will need to configure the connection. The following steps below will have you creating a connection named "UMN VPN" but you can name it anything you wish. You will only need to do this once.
- Open Quick Settings by clicking the WiFi signal icon in your taskbar.
- Select VPN.
- Select UMN Vpn (user).
- Select the VPN you'd like to use for the Group. For most users it will be the general use VPN named AnyConnect-UofMSplit.
- Enter your Internet ID for Username and your UMN password for Password.
- Click Submit.
- Verify you are connected.
- Open Quick Settings by clicking the WiFi signal icon in your taskbar.
- Check the VPN icon. If it is blue and says On then you are connected to the VPN.
Connecting to the VPN after the First Time
- Open Quick Settings by clicking the WiFi signal icon in your taskbar.
- Select VPN.
- Select the VPN you would like to connect to.
- Enter your UMN username and password.
- Click Submit.
- Verify you are connected.
- Open Quick Settings by clicking the WiFi signal icon in your taskbar.
- Check the VPN icon. If it is blue and says On then you are connected to the VPN.
You are now connected.
