Prepare the Shipment Yourself
- Make sure the object(s) is(are) packaged securely, and that you get their weight and dimensions.
- UPS provides some insight in their guide to shipping a computer.
- Review the OIT Stock Shipping Dimensions and Value to find the weight and dimensions of several commonly shipped computers and accessories without packing materials.
- Go to UPS, select Create a Shipment, and follow the website prompts to complete the required fields:
- Complete each step to create the shipment, including: Where, What, How, Details, Payment, and Review.
- Packaging type: Select My Packaging unless using specific UPS packaging materials
- Fill out the Declared value:
- This crucial field determines how much the package is insured for in case of theft, loss, or damage.
- You can use a combination of current prices for similar used items and the leftover warranty to arrive at this estimate.
- Most electronics have lithium batteries. Select Includes lithium batteries.
- Type of battery: Ion Cell.
- How is it packaged?: Contained or installed in equipment.
- Anything with batteries needs Ground Shipping.
- After verifying your selections, press Ship now. A new page and a pop-up window appears with the shipping label(s).
- Print and attach label to the shipping box.
- Print a receipt for your department's records.
- Document the tracking number presented on the final page.
- Email the tracking number to the user who will receive the package.
