ChatGPT - Why I’m not (too) scared about ChatGPT

Join Academic Technology Support Services, the Center for Educational Innovation, and Writing Across the Curriculum for a collaborative conversation in which we explore both the potential and pitfalls of ChatGPT and what it might mean for learning, teaching, and writing at UMN.

ChatGPT, a tool that uses artificial intelligence to respond to written prompts, has received a lot of media attention. While initial reactions focused on what automated writing and AI could mean for academic integrity, such tools invite a broader conversation about how new writing technologies may transform how writing is learned in classrooms and used in the wider world. We’ll discuss and experiment with the potential (good and bad) of ChatGPT. We’ll also identify a few reasons why students cheat and what we can do about it (think assessment design).  We’ll consider why and how we can be creative in using ChatGPT in our classes, for example, to support accessibility.
