Departmental Responsibilities

As outlined in the University Media Sanitization standard, all University of Minnesota departments are responsible for sanitizing media that leaves the University.

The University of Minnesota ReUse Program performs secure disposal of eWaste for the University of Minnesota. When using this program to recycle media that stores data, University departments are responsible for determining the security level classification and documenting the recycling of items that have security classification of Moderate or High. See the Media Sanitization standard for additional details.

When disposing of computer equipment that is considered a capital asset, it is the responsibility of University Department to fill out a Property Disposal form (UM 1393) and route to Inventory Services. Inventory Services will remove the computer items from the Department's capital equipment records. Remove all U of M asset management tags on the equipment. Contact Inventory Services at (612) 626-8222 if you have questions.
