TDX Knowledge: Assign a Category/Subcategory to a Knowledge Article

Every knowledge article should have a category assigned to it that represents the Technology, Service, or Business Process that the article addresses. If the article is intended for a particular college or unit, then the article should also have a subcategory assigned that represents that specific audience.

Based on usability testing and other feedback we have developed a new categorization schema for the TDX knowledge base. The new schema is effective Monday, April 17, 2023.

This article covers:

Overview of the Categorization Schema

The categorization schema provides for a category and subcategory.

  • Category represents the Technology, Service, or Business Process that the article addresses.
    • There are also separate categories for Unit Overviews and Archived articles.
  • Subcategory represents the Intended Audience which is the college or unit the article applies to.

Example Uses of the Categorization Schema

  • An article contains Canvas information applicable to a wide variety of people rather than a specific audience.
    • Assign the Canvas category and no subcategory.
  • An article contains Canvas information specifically for a CLA audience.
    • Assign the Canvas category and CLA as the subcategory
  • An article contains Asset Management information applicable to a wide variety of people rather than a specific audience.
    • Assign the Asset Management category and no subcategory.
  • An article contains Asset Management information specifically for an Athletics audience.
    • Assign the Asset Management category and Athletics as the subcategory.

Assigning a Category/Subcategory to an Article

When assigning a category to a knowledge article, you will want to first identify if the article is intended for a particular audience.

If the Article is Intended for a Specific Audience

  1. In the Category field, type the intended audience (usually an abbreviation of the college or unit). In the drop down menu you will see the available categories that have the relevant subcategory (audience).
Category field with CSE entered as the intended audience. The drop down menu displays available selections.
  2. Select the category/subcategory that matches the article's content.

If the Article is Intended for a General Audience

  1. In the Category field, type the name of the Technology, Service, or Business Process that the article addresses. The drop down menu will display the available categories that match what you have typed.
Category field with Accounts entered as the desired category. The drop down menu displayed the available selection.
