HST/AHC: VPN and Remote Desktop Setup

NOTE: To be added as a remote desktop user of a HST device or if the user needs access to the AHC01 VPN Departmental Pool, the user must fill out the HST - Virtual Private Network (VPN) service request form.

This document specifies the requirements and necessary steps for HCC (FORMERLY AHC) employees supported by Health Science Technology (HST) who want to establish a remote connection through a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or Remote Desktop. Some HCC (FORMERLY AHC) users might need VPN to access their shared drives remotely.

Note: Confirm that you have completed the Data/File Server Access Form (direct link) prior to attempting to connect to VPN.

Windows: VPN Setup

In order to use remote desktop on Windows, a VPN connection must be created. A VPN connection can be created using the Cisco Secure Mobility Client.

Note: You must select "Install as Administrator" when installing the Cisco Secure Client. 

To connect to VPN: 

  1. Open the Cisco Secure Mobility Client.
  2. Under the Ready to Connect Box select UMN - Department Pools.
    • Note: If nothing appears in the drop-down box, type tc-vpn-1.vpn.umn.edu into the blank box.
  3. In the Group field, select:
    • For Remote Desktop connections:
      • Departmental Pools
      • AnyConnect-AHC01 (both personal and HST supported devices)
    • For Shared Drive connections from HST-supported devices:
      • AnyConnect-UofMvpnFull
      • Note: HST supported devices can use either AHC01 or UMN-Full Tunnel-General Access to get the servers.
        • AnyConnect-AHC01 - You won't be able to use the internet when connected to this VPN.
        • AnyConnect-UofMvpnFull - You will be able to access the internet when connected to this VPN.
    • Note: Personal devices cannot connect directly to the shared drive.
      • Users on personal devices must first remote into an HST computer and then connect to the shared drive from that computer.
  4. Enter your Internet ID and password.
  5. Select OK.

Windows: Remote Access Setup

Note: In order to use Remote Access on a Personal Windows Device you must first install the Cisco Secure Mobility Client from the Information Technology Download & Guides website.

Follow these steps to connect:

  1. Connect to a VPN Connection using Cisco Secure Mobility Client
    • Must connect to Departmental Pools, then AnyConnect-AHC01 (both personal and HST supported devices)
  2. Note your computername.
    • This has the format D2xxxxxxx
  3. Open Remote Desktop Connection by:
    1. Searching "Remote Desktop" from the Windows Start Menu
    2. Select Remote Desktop Connection
    3. Click Show Options
    4. Type your computername.ad.ahc.umn.edu into the Computer field 
      • Example: D2xxxxxxx.ad.ahc.umn.edu
    5. Select Connect
    6. Enter your AD Username and Password (AHC Computer/AHC Server)
      • Note: Enter AD\Username
      • Sometimes you may need to use: ad.ahc.umn.edu\Username
  4. You should be connected successfully

Mac: VPN Setup 

In order to use remote desktop on a Mac, a VPN connection must be created. A VPN connection can be created by using the Cisco Secure Mobility Client

Note: You must select "Install as Administrator" when installing the Cisco Secure Client 

To connect to VPN: 

  1. Open the Cisco Secure Mobility Client 
    • Tip: If you cannot locate Secure Client, try searching for it in Spotlight Search (Cmd + Space) in the upper right of the desktop
  2. Under the Ready to Connect Box select UMN - Department Pools
    • Note: If the drop down box is blank and nothing appears, type tc-vpn-1.umn.edu into the blank box.
  3. In the Group field select :
    • For Remote Desktop connections
      • Select Departmental Pools
      • AnyConnect-AHC01 (both personal and HST supported devices)
    • For Shared Drive connections from HST-supported devices
      • Select Departmental Pools
      • Select AnyConnect-UofMvpnFull
      • Note: HST supported devices can use either AHC01 or UofMvpn to get the servers
        • AnyConnect-AHC01 - You won't be able to use the internet when connected to this VPN.
        • AnyConnect-UofMvpnFull - You will be able to access the internet access when connected to this VPN.
    • Note: Personal devices cannot connect directly to the shared drive
      • If you are on a personal device you must first remote into an AHC computer and then connect to the shared drive from that computer
  4. Enter your Internet ID and password
  5. Select OK
    • Note: If connected successfully you will see an icon on the dock appear displaying a padlock

HST-Supported Mac: Remote Access Setup 

Follow the steps specified above under Mac: VPN Setup. You will then be able to access HST User folders and departmental drives.

Important:HST supported users will not be able to establish a remote connection from a Mac to another Mac. 

Personal Mac: Remote Access Setup

You can also connect to HST managed Windows computers using your personal Mac computer. 

Note: In order to connect to Remote Access on a personal Mac you must first install the Cisco Secure Mobility Client from the Information Technology Download & Guides website.

Setting up Remote Access on a Personal Mac:

  1. Establish a VPN Connection using Cisco Secure Mobility Client.
    1. Select Departmental Pools
    2. Connect to AnyConnect-AHC01
  2. Note the computer name of the device you would like to remotely access.
    • This has the format D2xxxxxxx
  3. Install Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 from the app store.
  4. Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 app and do the following:
    1. Click the + button and select Add PC
    2. Enter the following information in the pop-up:
      • PC Name: D2xxxxxx.ad.ahc.umn.edu
    3. Click Add
  5. Double click on the saved connection to initiate a remote session
  6. You will receive a prompt to Enter Your User Account. Enter the following information:
    • Username: AD\Your Username
    • Password: Your AD Password
  7. Click Continue
  8. You should be connected successfully
