How to Print in the Computer Labs

Students are able to print at any OIT computer lab for 5 cents per side duplex for black-and-white, and 25 cents per side duplex for color.

Paying for Printing

The only payment accepted for printing is Gopher GOLD, which can be added to your U Card at a:

Printing

Normal Printing

  1. On your computer, print as you normally would.  Make sure you select the B&W or Color printer, depending on your needs.
    • Printer names will include their building, room number, and printer type.
  2. You will be asked to enter your Internet ID.
  3. Find the lab's Print Release Station 
    • They will be located near the printers.
  4. Swipe your U Card with the magnetic-stripe facing out.  
    • If it says ERROR: LOW BALANCE, that means your U Card has an insufficient amount of Gopher GOLD funds on it.
    • If your U Card is not scanning, try swiping it at different speeds. If that does not work, please contact the U Card Office
  5. Select your print job
  6. Click Print.

Troubleshooting Print Problems with PDFs

The majority of the printing problems that we encounter with our Printing service occur when printing PDFs. These issues can typically be remedied by adjusting the printing process.

  • Print the file using Adobe Acrobat Reader.
    1. Open the file in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
    2. Select Menu and then Print.
    3. Find the correct printer and update any necessary preferences.
  • Print the PDF file as an image using Adobe Acrobat.
    • Note: You will need Adobe Acrobat Pro.
    1. While the file is open in Adobe Acrobat, open the Menu.
    2. Choose Save as…
    3. Under Save as type, choose either JPEG (*.jpg, *.jpeg, *.jpe) or PNG (*.png)
    4. Click Save.
  • Optimize the file using Adobe Acrobat.
    • Note: You will need Adobe Acrobat Pro.
    1. Open the file in Adobe Acrobat.
    2. Click on the Menu tab
    3. In Save as other, select Optimized PDF…
    4. Make sure Settings is listed at Standard
    5. Click OK
    6. Choose where to save the file and select Save.

Refund Policy 

When you pay for printing and the print job fails due to a printer error, we will work with you to reprint the job at no charge. To help accommodate this, you must provide the file to the service desk staff found at the technology help walk-in locations or the OIT computer labs.

We are not able to provide cash refunds per University U Card policy: Gopher GOLD Value is not cash refundable and does not transfer between University of Minnesota coordinate campuses.
