Grouper: How Grouper Works

Grouper works by connecting the data derived from the system of record into groups. These groups are then applied as policy groups that are consumed by the application.

This process is done by connecting data repositories to Grouper such as registration data or HR data. That information is used for creating groups of raw data with like attribute qualities called basis groups. The basis groups are then sorted into more easy to read groups of meaningful cohorts called reference groups. As an example, a reference group would consist of "All students and faculty in the Math department." That reference group would then be leveraged into groups that make up our access policy for whatever application that might be for.
