Grouper: About Groups

A group is a collection of entities: either people or other groups.

There are two relationships within a group: Direct Member and Indirect Member.

If a person is added to a group, then they are Direct Members

If Group A is added to Group B, then Group A is a Direct Member of Group B, and all entities in Group A are Indirect Members of Group B.

For example, there might be two managed groups: all-faculty and all-staff. A third group, building-access, is made up of the two managed groups, and the access is given to the two managed groups. When a new faculty is added to all-faculty, they would automatically be given proper privileges in building-access.

a diagram has two boxes on the right: one for faculty and one for staff. There's a big box on the left with the two groups inside it showing that the groups are members of the building access group.
