Computer names are used to identify and organize University-owned devices. This article displays the processes for finding computer names on different operating systems: Mac, Windows, and Linux.
Note: If you use Windows, you can hold down the Windows key and the Pause/Break key on your keyboard to quickly view your computer name, regardless of your device's operating system.

Finding the computer name on Mac
- Click the Apple Menu, located in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
- Select System Preferences.
- Click Sharing.
- Computer Name should be located at the top of the Sharing window.
Note: To find the computer name for updated versions of MacOS, visit Find your computer's name and network address on Mac.
- To find the computer name for different MacOS versions, click the Select version dropdown menu and select the desired version.
Finding the computer name on Windows 11
- Click on the Search icon within your taskbar.
- Type Settings in the search bar.
- Open Settings .
- Select System settings if it is not selected automatically.
- The computer name will be listed within the System window.
- The computer name will be listed within the System window.
Finding the computer name on Windows 10
- Click the Start menu After that, you have two options:
- Use the search box.
- Type computer name in the Type here to search box in the lower left.
- Select View your PC name in the results.
- Use the Settings window.
- Click the Settings button.
- Click the System category in the Settings window.
- Click About in the menu on the left.
- You may need to scroll down to find the About menu by hovering your mouse pointer over the visible menu options.
- Use the search box.
- Find your computer name to the right of the Device name row below Device Specifications.
Finding the computer name on Windows 8
- Navigate to PC Info to find your computer name.
- Use the Search charm.
- Move cursor to the right-hand corner of the screen to unhide charms bar (or press Windows key + C).
- Click Search.
- Type computer name.
- Click PC info.
- Use the Settings charm.
- Move cursor to the right-hand corner of the screen to unhide charms bar (or press Windows key + C).
- Click Settings.
- Click PC info under Settings, or click Change PC settings, at the bottom right of the Settings charm menu.
- Use the Search charm.
- Find your computer name under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings.
Finding the computer name on Windows 7
- Click the Start menu button.
- Right-click on Computer.
- Select Properties.
- Find your computer name listed under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings.
Finding the computer name on Linux
- Open a terminal.
- To open a terminal in Ubuntu, select Applications, then Accessories, then Terminal.
- Type hostname at the command line.
- This will print your computer name on the next line.
