Drupal Lite: Configure Google Analytics for Your Site

Curious where your site's traffic is coming from or how people navigate around your site? You can add Google Analytics to your site to help monitor its traffic.

Note: Google Analytics is allowed for use at the University of Minnesota with all Drupal Enterprise and Drupal Lite web sites. However, it is not supported by Technology Help.

This article will cover:

Logging into Google Analytics

  1. Go to analytics.google.com.
  2. Enter your UMN email address and click Next.
  3. Log in with your University internet ID and password.

Creating a Google Analytics account

We recommend you create a new Analytics account for each of your sites. These are really more like profiles, all contained under your main account.

  1. If this is your first time using Google Analytics, click the Sign up button. This will take you to the New Account page.
    • If you already have used Google Analytics to track another site, you will need to create a new account. To create a new account, click on Admin at the bottom of the sidebar. In the Account column, select Create new account from the drop-down menu.
Create Account button in Admin Panel
  2. On the New Account page, enter the Account Name. This is used to identify the analytics account from others you may have. Choose options for Account Data Sharing Settings, then click Next.
  3. Enter the Property Name, and select your Reporting Time Zone, then click Next.
  4. Fill out the About your business section, then click Create.
  5. When the terms and conditions display, click I Accept.
  6. Select Web on the "Start collecting data" page.
  7. Enter the Website URL and Stream name for the site you'll be tracking.
  8. Record the Measurement ID on this page.

Linking your Google Analytics account to your Drupal Lite Site

  1. Copy the Measurement ID that was generated when you created your new Google Analytics Account.
  2. Go to your Drupal Lite Site you would like to track with this ID.
  3. Select Manage in the menu bar to expand the administrative menu.
  4. Select Configuration.
  5. Select Google Analytics in the System category.
  6. Enter the Measurement ID into the Web Property ID box.
  7. Select Save Configuration at the bottom of the page.

Additional information

  • It can take up to 24 hours for Google Analytics to detect your tracking code. Once the code is detected, you will be able to review your web statistics when you log into Google Analytics and click on Reporting.
  • If you are part of the University's healthcare component, you will need to request an exception to use Google Analytics. To learn more, please see Google Applications on the Academic Health Center resource hub.
