About My Work

What I Do

As an academic technologist in ATSS, I seek to help people navigate the intersection of pedagogy and technology. The landscape of technologies able to be applied to various learning opportunities changes daily. Instructors may feel daunted by the added expectation that learners have for the use of technology to help them in their learning. I seek to help instructors take steps to incorporate technology in their courses in a way that engages students and enhances learning in an inclusive and accessible way. I can help instructors take their very first step in using technology in their teaching, and I can also help instructors evaluate and improve existing ways they use technology in their teaching.

Background

I began my career as an educator over 20 years ago as a middle school language arts teacher. Even back then, I pioneered the use of technology in my classroom by using the school’s laptop cart to create a writing workshop in my classroom. After getting my master’s degree, I began helping a local small college transition their freshman and sophomore level writing courses into fully online and hybrid courses to give their students more options for completing general education courses. For close to a decade, I was also an adjunct instructor in higher ed, teaching in-person, online, and hybrid courses in writing. I then moved out of the instructor role and into the training and technical writing role for the Office of Information Technology’s Proactive User Support team. That role helped me grow in project management and leadership skills around technology changes at the University of Minnesota. I recently moved to Academic Technology Support Services to be able to focus more on academic technology usage and changes so that I could work more closely with instructors learning to use technology in their teaching.
