Digital Content: Draft an Announcement for MyU

Subject matter experts (SMEs) can draft MyU news communications using a template and content guidelines.

Drafting a MyU News Communication

  1. Access the MyU template and select Make a Copy.
  2. Use the content guidelines below to fill in the template.

Reviewing MyU Content Guidelines

MyU content has two parts: the summary/preview text and the content body text. The summary/preview text is limited to 150 characters or less, and the body copy is not limited but should be concise and factual.

Follow these guidelines to fill in the template and ensure you communicate key messages effectively:

  • Describe what is happening.
    • Describe why it is important, why it is happening, and why it is happening now.
  • Describe the benefit to the user and/or to the University.
  • Identify who it will impact. How much impact will it have?
  • Provide a timeline for when the change is happening, and be as specific as possible.
  • Provide a reference for where to find more information.
  • Provide contact information for people to ask questions.
  • Provide Technology Help information.
  • Optional depending on key messaging: Provide a call to action. Who needs to engage? How can people engage?

Finishing Drafting

After the content draft is complete, the SME should communicate with the Digital Content Communicators (DCC) Lead that it is ready for content editing.

The DCC Lead should add the draft content information to the most current IT@UMN Editorial Calendar.

Submitting a MyU Communication

Once the draft has been content edited and proofread, the DCC Lead can submit it to MyU for publication at least one week in advance of the desired publish date.

Refer to Submit to MyU for submission guidelines and steps.

Note: MyU news posts appear in order of submission. As items are submitted, older posts may move down the page. The DCC team is unable to influence the order in which posts appear on the MyU News page.
