Google Drive Web Hosting to be discontinued Aug. 31

Google Drive web hosting will retire on August 31.

Google recently announced that web hosting in Google Drive for users and developers will be discontinued on Aug. 31, 2016.

Because many University users employ Google Drive to host their websites, we want to help ensure the University community has adequate time to prepare for this change and offer the following guidance.

What website hosting options exist for users at the University of Minnesota?

Users who employ Google Drive to host websites have until Aug. 31, 2016 to determine an alternative website hosting solution.

Users at the University of Minnesota have four options from which to choose:

  1. Drupal Lite

  2. Google Sites

  3. Google Blogger

  4. The University’s web hosting for departments services.

Compare the features and benefits of these options  on the University’s Collaboration and Web Content Services website. Training and self-help guides are also available for many of these services from more information see Training & Usability Services and Lynda.com.

Users with questions about the best website hosting alternative for their needs can contact Technology Help.

Next Steps

In addition to offering our support for users with questions about this planned discontinuation of Google Drive’s web hosting capabilities, Collaboration and Web Content Services plans to offer reminders about the Aug. 31 deadline as it approaches.
