From the Vice Provost
My office facilitates the Student Rating of Teaching that is used by the great majority of instructors in the University of Minnesota system, and I am pleased to remain the primary point of contact for the Senate policy regarding Student Rating of Teaching.
In conjunction with peer evaluation of instruction, the SRT continues to be used in the processes for faculty salary, promotion, and tenure decisions. The SRT system enables students to provide valuable feedback in the areas of instructor preparedness, presentation, feedback, respectfulness, and student understanding. This is an essential component in the evaluation of instructors and the improvement of teaching at the University, and also provides assistance to future students in selecting courses.
A new online student rating of teaching (SRT) evaluation system (eXplorance Blue) has been licensed by the University of Minnesota and piloted in the the College of Education and Human Development to replace aging technology. This new SRT system provides several features that were not available in the previous evaluation system, including:
- Evaluation of multiple instructors: students can individually evaluate multiple instructors who are collaboratively teaching a course.
- Mobile device capability: students can complete evaluations via mobile devices.
- Integration to Moodle: links to course evaluations can be directly embedded into Moodle.
- Improved Integration with data infrastructure: better integration with the University’s reporting infrastructure (e.g., PeopleSoft) allows for the elimination of the manual maintenance that was needed by our previous system.
Please note that paper evaluations will still be available and individual colleges or departments will continue to determine whether paper or online adoption is most appropriate for their unit.
The "Evaluation of Teaching" policy contains information regarding the general provisions for the evaluation of teaching, peer evaluations of teaching, the SRT, and student release questions. This policy covers Twin Cities, Crookston, Morris, and Rochester campuses.
The Office of Measurement Services (OMS) coordinates and oversees the implementation of the new SRT. If you have any questions about the implementation of the new SRT in your college, please contact OMS Director Thomas Dohm.
