Moodle 3.2: Show Letter Grades in the Gradebook

Applies to: Moodle 3.2

There are two ways to show letter grades in the gradebook report for students:

  • In a separate Letter Grade column alongside the standard Grade (points) column. This is the preferred method.
  • In the Grades column as Letter alone, Letter with points, or Letter with percentage.

Creating a Letter Grade column in the Student View

  1. Go to the course homepage.
  2. Find the Administration block:
    • Click Gradebook setup.
  3. Select Course grade settings from the drop-down menu in the upper right.
  4. Scroll down to the Student View area.
  5. Select Show in the Show letter grades drop-down menu.
  6. Scroll down and click Save changes.

The Student View will now have a new column showing the letter grade for each assignment as well as a letter grade for the Course total. The Standard Gradebook view will not show letter grades. See instructions below for how to show letter grades for that gradebook view.

Displaying a letter grade in the grade columns in the Standard Gradebook view

  1. Go to the course homepage.
  2. Find the Administration block:
    • Click Gradebook setup.
  3. Select Course grade settings from the drop-down menu in the upper right.
  4. Scroll down to the Grade item settings area.
  5. Select one of the Letter grade options from the Grade display type drop-down menu:
    • Letter: displays only the letter grade.
    • Letter (real): displays the letter grade with the points total in parentheses.
    • Letter (percentage): displays the letter grade with the percentage in parentheses.
  6. Scroll down and click Save changes.

The Standard Gradebook view of the course will now show a letter grade in all columns as well as the course total column. The Student view will not show letter grades unless the first set of instructions above are also followed.
