Moodle 3.2: Provide Instructor Feedback within Downloaded Student Assignment Files

Applies to: Moodle 3.2.

Instructors can markup student assignment submission files with the Assignment Grading action to Download all submissions.

This action allows the instructor to:

  • Download all submitted files in one zipped file.
  • Open the zipped file and enter comments into each student file.
  • Save each commented student file.
  • Zip/compress all commented files and Upload them back into the Assignment grading page.
  • Moodle distributes them as the Comment file for the correct student.

The download process adds the student name and Moodle metadata as a prefix to the file name. Moodle uses this prefix title material to match the uploaded and comment rich file with the proper student user.

Note: Instructors should not use this feedback option for Assignments where students enter text directly into Moodle (Online text entry). This type of assignment will download the submission as an ".html" file. While these files can be opened in a Rich Text Editor application, it may be easier to view the submission in Detailed View in Moodle and enter Feedback Comments or attach a Feedback File directly in Moodle.

New in Moodle 3.2: Before downloading assignment submissions, review the setting for Download submissions in folders in the Options area below the submissions listing. The Default is to download submissions in folders. If the assignment submission is more than a single file, then submissions may be downloaded in folders. Each submission is put in a separate folder, with the folder structure kept for any subfolders, and files are not renamed.

Downloading and marking up student assignment submissions

  1. Go to the course homepage.
  2. Find the assignment you wish to provide feedback for and click the assignment link.
  3. Click View all submissions.
  4. Select Download all submissions under Grading Action in the upper right.

  5. Save the zipped file in a known location on your computer.
  6. Locate the zipped file and unzip it. Some computer operating system will unzip the file during the download process.
    Note: All files should be in one folder. It is good practice not to move the files out of this folder.
  7. Add comments:
    1. Open each file with the proper application (e.g., Word, Acrobat Reader).
    2. Enter comments.
    3. Save your changes. DO NOT RENAME THE FILE.

Uploading assignment files with markup comments

  1. Select all the assignment files on your computer and compress them into a zipped archive.
    • On a Mac, Ctrl+click on the selected files and choose Compress X items.
    • In Windows, Right-click on the selected files and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  2. Return to the Moodle assignment grading page:
    • In Moodle, go to the course homepage.
    • Find the Assignment and click the link for it.
    • Click View all submissions.
  3. Select Upload multiple feedback files in a zip under Grading Action in the upper right. If you do not see the option to Upload, see Setting the Feedback files option below.

  4. On the upload a file page use the Choose a file button and browse for the zipped file, or drag and drop it into the Upload a file box.
  5. Click the Import feedback files button. Moodle identifies which files have comments.
  6. Click the Confirm button.
  7. Click the Continue button. The modified feedback files are uploaded and attached to proper student. You will still need to enter a Grade and any short Feedback Comments.

Setting the Feedback files option

The Feedback files option is selected by default in newly created Assignments, but can be turned off. If you do not see a need for this option you can turn it off at any time.

WARNING: Turning Feedback files off will delete all Feedback files already submitted for that assignment.

  1. Go to the course homepage.
  2. Find the assignment you wish to provide feedback for and click the assignment link.
  3. In the Administration block under Assignment administration, click Edit settings.
  4. Scroll down and click Feedback types to display the options.
  5. Make sure Feedback files is checked.
